Overview

Pete’s Hamburger Stand in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, is a nostalgic nod to classic American roadside fare. Located at 118 W Blackhawk Ave, this humble hamburger stand offers a straightforward menu centered on what it does best: juicy, flavorful burgers that celebrate simplicity. The main draw here is the iconic steamed burger, served with grilled or fried onions and a choice of condiments including spicy mustard, ketchup, and salt and pepper. This focus on a single, well-executed dish grounds Pete’s firmly in tradition, delivering a taste reminiscent of childhood memories and old-fashioned cookouts.

What makes Pete’s stand out is the way it honors the craft of the water-boiled burger—a regional specialty where patties are steamed rather than grilled or fried, resulting in a tender, juicy texture that melds perfectly with the caramelized onions. This method imparts a distinct, satisfying flavor that loyal patrons rave about. Whether you are opting for the classic Hamburger with Onions or Pete’s special Pete’s Burger with Onions & Mustard, the quality and care put into each sandwich are evident.

The space surrounding Pete’s is as modest as the menu. The stand itself offers no indoor seating, embodying the true spirit of a quick, casual stop. Yet, this limitation is part of its charm. Patrons often find refuge in the nearby park, soaking in the local scenery while savoring their meal. The stand’s popularity can lead to lines, especially during peak hours or warm, sunny days, but the friendly and hardworking staff work efficiently to keep the experience smooth and welcoming.

Targeting both locals and travelers passing through Southwestern Wisconsin, Pete’s is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it’s a piece of regional culinary history. It’s a destination for those who appreciate authenticity over flash, who want to enjoy a simple, honest burger made with care. If you find yourself in Prairie du Chien, this stand is well worth the stop not only for the flavor but for the experience—a taste of Americana served right at the roadside.

This place was highly recommended by a coworker if I was passing through the area and I gotta say I was skeptical at first when he told me about them and when I arrived. Like others have stated the menu is as simple as it gets, burgers and chips. I must say though the burgers were extremely delicious and I could have polished off a half dozen! For sure worth the stop if you're passing through and the service was very friendly and informative. No seating at the location as it's just a simple stand but you can just drive a couple blocks down like we did and enjoy your meal in the gorgeous and spacious park. We will be back and happy 110th!!

What you see is what you get. No seating except for a couple of public benches. Limited hours, best check their Facebook page. 2 choices either with or without onions. The staff is very friendly and hard working. The burgers taste like something straight out of my childhood. If you are in the area or passing through try Pete's for a one-of-a-kind experience! But be patient, as the line can be long and they can only serve so many burgers at a time.

We really enjoy Pete's. The burgers are so juicy and fresh. Plus the price is reasonable. Probably the only negative is the fact they're so popular that there can be lines at times, waiting to get a burger. And if they happen to run out it takes up to 50 minutes for them to have more, at least that's what happened today. Oh, and they do not have any seating at all. There are some benches on main street if they're available when you're there.

This legendary burger stand is a must of you're traveling through Prairie Du Chein! We enjoyed the spicy mustard better than the regular mustard but you really cannot go wrong either way. Burgers are $6.50 or so a piece.

This is a great seasonal old fashioned burger stand. 72 and sunny today and the line was almost around the corner At just after noon. No seating, just burgers, with or without fried onions. Topped with your choice, Ketchup, Brown Mustard, yellow mustard, salt and Pepper. We did the burgers with onions, Salt & Pepper, Ketchup, and both mustards. They were delicious and hot. It is definitely a place to try if you are anywhere near Southwestern Wisconsin.

This cozy little place feels entirely out of time. Walking up to the window of this tiny stand felt like walking 50 years into the past, but in a good way, a very nostalgic way. I wasn't sure what to expect, and so I told them (a lovely older couple and a young man) I'd never been there before. The young man took the time to politely explain the menu to me, as simple as it is. Here it is: Burgers are served with or without onions, and you can have your onions fried or raw (I went with fried, they really pile them on!). The burgers do not come with cheese, but you can order them without a bun. The only sides offered are bagged frito-lays potato chips and canned soda. I was slightly disappointed to see they didn't offer fries at all. But, when you've been running a place this long, I trust that you know what you're doing. The burger was really good, but not great, and it had sort of a sweet tangy taste that made me feel like they used worcestershire sauce and possibly coca-cola for the deglaze. The burgers are all served well done (fine by me). I went with sour cream and onion potato chips and an A&W soda. The soda was warm, but hey, it's summer. We were able to get two meals for under $20, which feels like pretty good value to me. Overall, this is a definite must-see and must try, even if it's just for the novelty of it. A few notes: The stand is walk-up only and has no dedicated seating available, although there are benches along the road outside.

This is a unique experience. There is just one flat top grill and due to the way they are made, there cannot be a continuous flow of burgers. They have to be made all at the same time. This means they come out in batches and if your timing is bad you may need to wait 15 minutes for the next batch. I would say the burgers are worth the wait. I tried them plain, with mustard and with ketchup and mustard. My favorite was with just mustard. Overall, it's worth a stop if you're in the area. The burgers are good and if you have to wait there's a good chance you'll have good conversation to pass the time.

If you are a carnivore and find yourself hungry while in Prarie du Chien, stop by this classic hamburger stand! There are no hard decisions to be made- yes/no onions on your burger, and which condiments would you like. We were lucky and did not have to wait in a line. The burgers were served quickly, they were juicy and hot. We stood in nearby shade to enjoy. My husband went back for a second one…
